The simple atmospheric distillation test has been used as a main method of volume of a petroleum products since the advent of the oil industry. Distillation properties of hydrocarbons, especially in the case of fuels and solvents, often have a significant effect on their safety and efficiency.
Distillation properties are very important for aircraft and car gasoline because they affect the starting and warming of the engine, as well as the tendency to suffocate due to the formation of steam at high temperatures or high altitudes, or both.
